A dual-fuel heat pump for a Nampa family tired of gas bills

A sound gas furnace, an air conditioner that died, and a family watching their winter bills. We paired a cold-climate heat pump with the furnace they already had.

The job at a glance

  • ✓

    Location: South Nampa, Idaho

  • ✓

Home: 2,100 sq ft two-story, 8-year-old gas furnace, failed 20-year-old AC

  • ✓

System: cold-climate inverter heat pump matched to the existing furnace, dual-fuel thermostat

  • ✓

    Duration: one day

  • ✓

Rebates: utility heat pump rebate and federal tax credit

The challenge

The air conditioner was done, but the furnace was eight years old and in good shape. Replacing both felt wasteful. Replacing just the AC meant another twenty years of burning gas through the shoulder seasons.

What we did

We replaced the air conditioner with a cold-climate heat pump matched to the existing furnace and coil, and installed a dual-fuel thermostat. The heat pump heats and cools from spring through fall and on most winter days; below a set outdoor temperature, the furnace takes over.

The result

A new cooling system for the same money as a plain air conditioner, with the heat pump doing most of the winter heating at a lower cost than gas, and the furnace still there as backup. The rebates and tax credit brought the net cost below what a standard AC replacement would have been.

In the homeowner's words

"We expected to just replace the AC. Instead we got something that heats the house most of the winter for less than gas. The furnace barely runs now."
