Knowing when it's time
Nobody wants to replace an air conditioner. The question is whether you're going to do it on your schedule in April, with rebates and time to compare options, or at 5pm in July after the third repair.
We'll tell you honestly where your unit stands. If it's past twelve years and facing a compressor or refrigerant leak repair, replacement almost always wins on cost over the next few summers, and the new unit will run quieter and cheaper from day one.
You'll see options at two or three price points, what each one will cost to run, and a firm installed price.

Signs it's time
When replacement beats another repair
Over 12 years old
Efficiency has moved a long way. A new unit can cut cooling costs by a quarter or more.
Older refrigerant
If it runs on a refrigerant that's been phased out, every top-off gets more expensive.
Compressor failure
The one repair that usually isn't worth making on an older unit.
Two repairs in two summers
The pattern that says the next one is coming.
Never keeps up
A unit sized wrong for the house will never be comfortable, no matter how many repairs.
Replace just the outdoor unit?
Sometimes. The indoor coil has to match the new condenser, so a mismatched pairing usually costs efficiency and warranty coverage. If the furnace and coil are young, we can often match a new outdoor unit to them. If they're the same age as the old condenser, replacing the pair is usually the better money.

AC Replacement questions
How long will a new air conditioner last?+
Fifteen years is typical in our climate with annual maintenance, often longer.
Will a new AC lower my power bill?+
Usually noticeably. A modern unit at today's minimum efficiency uses considerably less electricity than a unit from the early 2010s, and a variable-speed model does better still.
Are there rebates for replacing an air conditioner?+
Utility rebates for high-efficiency units and heat pumps are common, and federal tax credits apply to qualifying heat pumps. We'll tell you what applies and do the paperwork.

What your neighbors are saying
“Our furnace quit on a Sunday night in January. They were here Monday morning, showed me the cracked igniter, gave me a price and had it running in under an hour. No upsell, no drama.”
“Second opinion saved us thousands. Another company said we needed a whole new system. Bright Peak found a failed capacitor and a dirty coil. That was two summers ago and it's still running fine.”
“They installed two ductless heads in our old North End house in a day. The crew was polite, cleaned up, and walked us through the remotes. We finally have air conditioning.”
